THAG awards winners of ‘Guyana Through My Eyes’ essay contest

The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) yesterday announced the winners of the 2015 THAG Essay Competition.

The competition was hosted during Tourism Awareness month, under the theme, “Guyana through My Eyes.” A total of 31 entries from all across the country were submitted for two categories designated for primary and secondary school students.

Out the 31 entries, THAG selected primary-level student Victoryne Mohabir and secondary-level student Omari Obaseki Joseph as the winners after their entries were judged as being the best. The essays were scrutinised by a panel of judges which included Dr. Steve Surujbally, local award-winning writer Ruel Johnson, internationally acclaimed writer Sharon Maas and Vice-President of THAG Andrea de Caires.

According to President of THAG Shaun McGrath, the winners were selected based on the accumulation of points as it relates to creativity, structure, adherence to topic, grammar and “Wow factor.”

Mohabir, a student of St. Margret’s Primary School, was awarded a weekend trip for two to the Surama Eco Lodge in Region 9. Joseph, who also won the secondary category of last year’s competition, was awarded a weekend trip for two at Cayman House, Yupukari, which is also located in Region 9.

Airline tickets for both trips were sponsored by Trans-Guyana Airways.
