The people expect better service from GPL

There have been allegations that the credentials of the acting CEO of GPL are not appropriate for the post he holds. If they are, then why is the subject Minister not making them public; after all, he is a public official. However, it is the responsibility of the government to make sure that GPL’s consumers and the taxpayers are getting their money’s worth. GPL is known for its inefficiencies, mismanagement and poor customer relations; it does not need a CEO and a minister to compound its problems.

GPL cannot continue to work with a failed model and a CEO in whom the public does not have confidence. The people are frustrated with the blackouts which destroy electrical appliances and if the government does not act, it will lose credibility. The idea to send other CEOs on administrative leave in order to facilitate an investigation and not the acting CEO of GPL is totally wrong. This is a blatant double standard that has been set by the Minister who in this instance has abandoned the concepts of fairness and transparency. If the government does not act and put an end to such arrogance, it will definitely lose credibility and would likely feel the wrath of the people. In fact only three ministers from the AFC – Natural Resources, Public Communications and Business ‒ are performing efficiently.

GPL was profitable in 2015 but not because of any changes or improvement in services but mainly from declining fuel prices. There are absolutely no improvements to the operations of GPL which continues to overcharge customers and underserve them. The people expect better service from GPL, fewer blackouts. It is time for the government to act on behalf of the people.
