Rory Westmaas played a role in the liberation struggle

Dear Editor,

I am grateful to Mr Nigel Westmaas for his letter in the Stabroek News (Thursday, January 28), in which he informed readers of the passing of his uncle the late Rory Westmaas on January 24.

Those of us who are familiar with Guyana’s political struggle during the days of colonial rule would know of the role played by the late Rory Westmaas in the liberation struggle of the then British colony.

He was closely associated with the PPP and more particularly gave his undivided support to Dr Jagan and the PPP during those testing years.

Like so many of his comrades, including Dr Jagan and his wife Janet, he suffered at the hands of the colonial authorities, but that in no way broke his spirit and his resolve to see an independent and democratic Guyana.

I take this opportunity to extend my condolences to his bereaved relatives and his numerous comrades and friends.

Yours faithfully,
Hydar Ally
