Airport security officer was not polite

Dear Editor,

This morning my child who is not a Guyanese had a very disappointing experience at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport at 3 am during her departure. She told me that while she was going through the security checkpoint, “the female security on duty spoke to me like I am a dog … barked at me … she was just too mean. But I said thank you and have a good morning after.”

My concern here is how will you attract visitors and tourists to this country if this is the kind of treatment they will receive? Please note that my child is a widely travelled individual and was quite appalled at the behaviour of the security personnel. Those who travel frequently to other countries know that this is not the behaviour you encounter at other airports or entry points of a country.

My recommendation is for these front-line employees to be properly trained to international standards, so that those who visit can leave with a lasting impression of hospitality, politeness and professionalism. Then they will want to come back or even recommend others to come and visit.

Yours faithfully,
