New health centre at Bath to serve over 4,000

Residents of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, will soon benefit from the services of a new health centre that was commissioned on Friday by Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton, GINA said.

The health centre was funded by the Government of Guyana and the Caribbean Development Bank through the Basic Needs Trust Fund to the value of $32 million. It will soon be fully operational.

Norton is of the hope that once the health centre is fully functioning, maternal deaths will be brought to a minimum, GINA said. The minister explained that many times maternal deaths happen because patients arrive too late at a health institution. “If you have the centre in the village, the chances of getting that person coming to the clinic are so much easier than if they have to travel long distances,” he stated. Norton is also confident that the health centre will provide jobs for residents of the Region Five community. He posited that once the centre is providing quality health services, more than 4,000 people will seek its services.
