Students and teachers turned out in their numbers for the Children’s Mashramani Dance and Masquerade finals that were held yesterday at the National Cultural Centre.

The performances that graced the stage brought the passion and showcased the creativeness of the students who entertained their audience with beautiful and energetic routines that showed diversity.

Although the dances were being judged in four different categories: interpretive, religious beliefs, legend and tradition and social commentary, different themes such as suicide, abuse, crime and violence came out through the performances.

Children performing in the 5-7 and 8-10 years’ age groups took the stage during the morning, while 11-13 and 14-17 years competed in the afternoon.

This year saw the students performing a dance category, Hip Hop, which was introduced last year

into the competition. The Masquerade category was done by a band or individually.

Today the competition continues with the primary and secondary schools competing in the Calypso and Dramatic Poetry finals.

The competitions are being hosted by the Ministry of Education.
