Convict says wasn’t in right senses during escape

“I wasn’t in my right senses,” a convict yesterday told a city court after he was charged with escaping from police.

Appearing before Magistrate Judy Latchman, Andel Thompson was read the charge which stated that on February 15, at the Tactical Services Unit headquarters, Young Street, Georgetown, having been convicted of simple larceny, he escaped from the lawful custody of a Police Constable.

The court heard that Thompson was found guilty of the simple larceny charge last August.

Thompson, 34, pleaded guilty to the charge and stated that he wasn’t in his right senses. He said he just began walking and was later stopped by an officer and arrested. He added that he was not sure if he was losing his mind at the time and apologised for leaving custody of the Constable.

A not-guilty plea was entered by Magistrate Latchman subsequent to the explanation given by the accused.

A mental evaluation was ordered for the defendant and the matter was adjourned to March 10.
