This is to handle the expected increase in tourists for Guyana’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in May.

The volunteers have been drawn from the Ministry of Education’s Department of Culture Youth and Sports’ volunteer programme. The three-day training is being done at the department on Main Street.

Paul Waldron, owner of ‘Outdoor Expeditions’ is in charge of the training, GINA said.

Waldron noted that tour guides are a necessary component of the tourism industry.

He explained that “most times they are the face of the country as they are the persons who meet with guests and interact with guests during their stay.” “This is a first step. It can be a very rewarding career. It allows you to meet numerous people and if you stick with it, it allows you to learn quite a lot,” Waldron stated.

Chevon Lim, Senior Communications Officer at the GTA expressed the hope that the participants present at the training would embrace tour guiding as a career, and “hopefully we will be able to add them into our database, so whenever the need arises, we can call on them.”
