Government should give relief to former foreign affairs workers and customs officers

Dear Editor,

The constitution is the supreme law of our country. Everyone has the right to work and not be discriminated against. Workers’ rights and justice should be upheld at all times regardless of politics, race, etc. The law takes precedence over all other considerations.

A KN writer, Freddy Kissoon, has written on more than one occasion about the injustices suffered by ex-customs officers and ex-foreign affairs workers at the hands of the then PPP/C government. Some of those persons lost over twenty years of employment as well as certain benefits and will continue to lose if the current APNU+AFC government does not correct this wrong. In fact, the APNU+AFC government campaigned and spoke of the discrimination meted out to these ex-customs officers and ex-foreign affairs workers. Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge, recently through the Guyana Chronicle spoke of the case of the ex-foreign affairs people. I think Minister of Finance Winston Jordan is also aware of the ex-customs officers’ issue. It should be an obligation on the part of the APNU+AFC government to bring some relief as soon as possible to these people, either by re-employing them or giving them an opportunity to serve and collect their benefits due to them.

Time is of the essence.

Yours faithfully,

Brent Dover
