Fire set by prisoners at Camp St put out

Chaos broke out at the Georgetown Prison last night after prisoners lit a fire but quick action by the authorities prevented what could have been a major disaster.

Stabroek News understands that the fire started at around 9:30 PM in the eastern section of the building. Three fire trucks were summoned and managed to extinguish the fire which was however re-lit by the prisoners several times.

Reports revealed that the prisoners set alight a mattress and a door to a cell. While it is unclear what prompted their action, the prisoners were heard shouting about their “daily plight”.

While many called for “freedom” others were heard shouting “they does throw away we food, we don’t get to eat.”

A crowd gathered and the fire service responded promptly. A number of police officers and soldiers were summoned to assist with security around the prison. They were all heavily armed.

There was loud banging on the prison walls and roof of the building and attempts by the prisoners to remove grills securing the buildings. There was also a high scent of kerosene oil.

Over the years there have been many similar protests by prisoners over conditions in the jail, food and the lengthy wait for trials among other issues. Conditions in the prison have also been criticised by international human rights groups.
