Bhagwandin steals the show at Novices Powerlifting C/ships

Powerlifters from Life’s Gym, RipHit System and Fitness 53 displayed their strength prowess on Sunday to lift the marquee titles at this year’s juniors and novices powerlifting championships at the Rosignol Primary School.

Life’s Gym’s Nessa Bhagwandin stole the show by winning the female best lifter trophy while gym mate Romario Gonsalves won the same title in the male category.

Bhagwandin’s total was 325kg. Lifting in the 61kg category, Bhagwandin had a best squat of 142.5kg , a 57.5kg bench press and a 125kg dead lift. Her wilks totaled 405.145 points.

Gonsalves, the 59 kg lifter, showed plenty of promise with a total of 508kg.

The sub junior squatted 212.5kg, bench pressed 85kg and dead lifted 210.5kg. His wilks points accumulated to 454.162 was the highest among all males that competed on Sunday.

Second was best lifter junior (equipped) winner, Kevin Bridgelall of the Hardcore Gym who racked up 446.949 wilks points after squatting 207.5kg, bench pressing 112.5kg and dead lifting 210kgs.

Meanwhile, RipHit’s Melissa Tucker (female Best Lifter overall-unequipped), Fitness 53’s Jamal Blair (male Best Lifter overall-equipped), Carlos Peterson (male Best lifter overall-unequipped), Tinnisa Toney (female sub junior overall-equipped) and Dimitri Chan (sub junior overall-unequipped) were the champions in their respective categories.

Powerlifting consists of three events – the squat, dead lift and bench press – during which competitors lift successively heavier weights in three attempts. Their best lift from each of the three events is tallied for an overall total.

The sum of 32 athletes competed at the event which started at 11:00hrs and concluded around eight hours later.

Fitness Express was the lone sponsor of the fixture.
