Cuban found dead at Providence

A Cuban national was discovered dead during the wee hours of yesterday morning on the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara and it is suspected that he was shot during a robbery attempt.

He has been identified as Joel Perez Laffita, 47, who was last seen alive around 8.30pm on Monday, when he disembarked a ship which arrived from Trinidad and Tobago.

He operated as an engineer on the ship, which docked at the Rubis gas station wharf, located at Providence, around 6pm on  Monday.

The police, in a brief statement, said Laffita’s body had a wound to the neck.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum subsequently said investigators managed to obtain CCTV footage which is currently being reviewed in hopes of capturing the suspect in the attack. He also said that a number of persons were questioned.

Providence residents recalled seeing a person, dressed in a hoodie, riding up to Laffita moments after they heard the sound of a loud explosion, suspected to be a gunshot. The suspect then rode away.

Laffita had in his possession a small quantity of cash, which was found intact.
His body is currently at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
