Cops advised to charge husband over fatal chopping of Corriverton woman

The police have been advised to charge Navindra Bandu, who allegedly chopped his wife to death on Tuesday during a domestic dispute at Princetown, Corriverton, Berbice, with murder.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum yesterday told Stabroek News that Bandu, called “Birdie,” who has confessed to killing his wife, Indrawattie Somwar, called “Sharda,” is expected to be charged on Monday.

Somwar died around 4.30 pm on Tuesday at her Lot 22 Princetown, Corriverton, home after she received several chops to her head.

Bandu had been consuming alcohol throughout the day and only returned home in the afternoon. His altercation with Somwar started after he requested some food, which he subsequently hit out of her hands.

As a result, she told him about his behaviour and requested that he leave the house but he became angry and went into the kitchen area, where he allegedly armed himself with a cutlass and dealt her two chops to her head. She attempted to escape but collapsed in front of their yard.

Bandu reportedly told investigators during his confession that he had invested a lot of money into building the house in which they were living and he had worked for $60,000 recently and had given all to Somwar. He claimed that on the day of the murder, he asked Somwar for a small amount of money so he could “take a drink” but she became very abusive toward him and requested that he leave the house. As a result, he told the police, he became “very hurt and annoyed” and dealt her several chops to her head.

A post-mortem examination performed yesterday on the dead woman’s remains revealed that she died as a result of shock and haemorrhage due to the chop wounds she sustained. She will be laid to rest tomorrow.
