There has been a 20% decrease in the number of registered disciplined service members who voted on March 8, when compared with the numbers from last year’s general and regional elections.
According to Chief Election Officer Keith Lowenfield, 55.6% of the disciplined service members cast their votes last week for local government elections (LGE), compared with the estimated 76% at least year’s general elections.
However, the figure is higher than the 40% estimated by the groups contesting in Georgetown.
Several sections of society have predicted a low voter turnout for Friday’s LGE. Traditionally, voters have not responded to LGE as enthusiastically as they have to general and regional elections.
The last local government elections held on August 8, 1994 saw a voter turnout of 36%.
