I read in your Sunday edition (March 13) the letter by Senior Counsel Bryn Pollard about the announced preference of Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo to issue additional radio licences rather than revoke those issued by former President Jagdeo (‘PM has taken wise approach in relation to broadcast licences’).
Sound legal advice from a great legal mind. I hope the government heeds his advice and accepts the thinking of the Prime Minister.
In his article in various sections of the media on Sunday, and SN yesterday (‘The PM is wrong on radio licences’) David Hinds argues that these licences should be revoked because this was the promise made by the coalition to its supporters prior to elections. Certainly Mr Hinds must know that a government cannot act merely on promises it made prior to becoming the government. It has to act within the law and seek to, by its decisions, avoid hefty litigation costs, and perhaps eventual embarrassment and the payment of monetary awards.
On another note, Freddie Kissoon in a recent column in the waterfalls newspaper made mention of me as, among other things, a frequent letter writer. He is right. I am a frequent letter writer. I write because I care. I write because I am of the firm view that as a Guyanese, notwithstanding that I am in the diaspora, I am entitled to express my opinion. I write because I believe in constructive dialogue. I write because I believe in sharing information and experiences. I have no problem with those who do not share my opinion. I respect their right to disagree.
Finally, I write because I love Guyana!
