Mexican national shot in city hotel robbery

Bandits shot a Mexican national to his lower back on Saturday night, robbing him of over US$3000 while he was at a bar at the Kanuku Suites hotel.

In a statement, police said that at around 11:45pm on Saturday, two men entered the hotel pretending to be customers but then pulled out guns and held up Rondell Orlando, 31, who was at the bar with two other men. The bandits took away US$3000, $40,000 and two cell phones.

Orlando, who is a Mexican national, was shot to his left side during the incident after which the perpetrators escaped in a waiting car, the statement said. It added that he has been admitted to hospital as the investigations continue.

When Stabroek News visited the hotel yesterday, management declined to comment saying that based on the hotel’s rules, they are not permitted to speak. However, they said, if they find it necessary to speak after investigations are concluded, the media would be contacted.

Stabroek News understands that the police are reviewing surveillance footage from the hotel.
