Suspects in Hillfoot farmer’s murder for court today

The suspects in the murder of farmer Anthony Breedy are expected to make their first court appearance today, according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum.

The trio who were identified as Anthony Goriah, Donnel Trap and Keron Timothy Corbin are expected to appear in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts’ where they will be charged jointly with the crime.

Five suspects, including the girlfriend of Goriah, had been held for questioning into the murder but later released owing to insufficient evidence linking them to the crime.

Last week Tuesday, the prime suspect was arrested at Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara moments after a stolen vehicle belonging to Breedy was recovered. The two other men were arrested on Thursday at Ithaca, West Bank Berbice. Among the items recovered by the police were a blood-stained shirt belonging to Goriah, Breedy’s cellphone and a few electrical items that were stolen from him.

Breedy was found dead around 11 am last Monday in the bottom flat of his Lot 67 Hillfoot, Soesdyke/Linden Highway home. His hands and feet were bound and his head was bashed in. A piece of wood suspected to be the murder weapon was found at the scene.

The police, in a press release, had said there were multiple injuries to his head, while the upper flat of his house was ransacked.

Breedy was last seen alive around 2 pm last Saturday.

Last week Monday, a friend visited to take some fruits for him and found him lying motionless on the bottom flat with blood about his body. A bed sheet had been used to bind his hands and feet. There was no indication of forced entry into the house.

A post-mortem examination performed on his remains revealed that he died as a result of asphyxia due to manual strangulation compounded by multiple blunt trauma to the head.

The prime suspect had told investigators that he had recently met Breedy at a bar in Timehri, where they became friends. He also reportedly gave a detailed description of what transpired last Saturday evening, before Breedy was killed.

A reliable source informed this newspaper that the suspect contacted Breedy last Saturday night to enquire about his whereabouts and was told that he was at a bar at Timehri. As a result, they met there and subsequently left for Breedy’s house. The suspect reportedly admitted that arrangements were already made with his two accomplices, who were hiding behind a mango tree outside the premises.

The suspect had reportedly indicated to them that he would call their phone, which would be a signal to enter the house and rob Breedy before murdering him.

Thereafter, the suspect went into the house with Breedy, where he consumed three bottles of Guinness and then called his accomplices, who entered the home. Breedy was beaten and tied up, his house was ransacked and a quantity of household and electrical appliances were carted off in his Toyota Suzuki vehicle.

The vehicle was driven to Bagotville, West Bank Demerara, where the main suspect’s girlfriend resides, to drop off a few of the stolen items, then to a house in South Ruimveldt, where the trio split the loot, including a small quantity of money and slept until Sunday morning. The main suspect then left to try and sell the vehicle. However, he was apprehended before he could do so.

Three empty Guinness bottles were recovered by crime scene ranks and taken for DNA testing.
