APNU+AFC won five municipalities, PPP/C three

The ruling APNU+AFC coalition has gained outright control of five of the country’s nine municipalities following Friday’s Local Government Elections (LGE).

These results made available on the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) website  yesterday show that the ruling APNU+AFC Coalition has complete control of the capital city of Georgetown, the mining town of Linden, New Amsterdam and the new municipalities of Lethem and Bartica

The People’s Progressive Party/Civic has gained control of the councils at Anna Regina, Rose Hall and Corriverton where the coalition did not contest.

The two parties hold equal power in the new municipality of Mabaruma which saw the highest municipal turnout when 58.44% of the registered electors cast their votes last Friday. Both parties gained six seats on that council, three proportional representation and three first past the post seats.

*Constituency 7 in the municipality of Rose Hall saw the same number of votes being cast for the PPP/C candidate Ramnauth Chattergoon and independent candidate Sandra Chisholm. The holder of this seat will be determined after a by-election is held.
