Government not doing enough to address mental illness survey finds

Dear Editor,

Regarding recent commentaries on suicide, I conducted an opinion survey earlier this month that interviewed people from all walks of life. Almost everyone feels the government (preceding ones also) has not been doing enough to combat suicide or to address mental illness. Similar findings were obtained about how people view government’s role in addressing mental illness.

Almost every respondent said they would seek help for someone with mental illness. Most also feel mentally ill persons can live normal lives with assistance and support from others.

Yours faithfully,
Vishnu Bisram
