Sixth Zika case confirmed – CMO

A sixth Zika virus case has been confirmed here, according to GINA.

The patient is from the Soesdyke area on the East Bank of Demerara. According to Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr. Shamdeo Persaud, the other five persons have fully recovered.

Meanwhile, GINA said that preventative measures continue countrywide with over 5000 chemically treated bed nets having been distributed. An additional 75,000 is available for distribution. In addition, the Vector Control Services is fogging in many communities.

Zika is a virus transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. Signs of the illness include fever, headache, joint and muscle pain, rash and sometimes swelling of the limbs. Some persons may also experience vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.
