Tabatinga gold miner remanded on cocaine trafficking charge

A Tabatinga resident was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with possession of just under 10 grammes of cocaine that was found in his yard.

It is alleged that on March 29th, at 155 Tabatinga, Region Nine, Earl Alfred, also known as “Cow,” 47, had in his possession 9.5 grammes of cocaine for trafficking.

Alfred, a gold miner, pleaded not guilty to the charge that was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.

According to Alfred’s lawyer, Jerome Khan, who sought bail, his client was not present when the police found the cocaine in his yard during a search. Alfred and his wife, along with their son, were at home at the time and they denied having any knowledge of the drugs, the lawyer told the court. He further added that the yard in which the cocaine was found is an open yard, which can be accessed by a number of occupants.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail, while saying that the cocaine was found in the yard under some bushes in the presence of the defendant.

Alfred was subsequently remanded to prison until May 30th, when the matter will be called at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.
