Two held for questioning over coast guardsman’s murder

Two persons are in custody for questioning over the murder of Lance Corporal Kevon Payne, who was gunned down on Tuesday night, a police source confirmed yesterday.

Payne, 22, called ‘Scar,’ of Sussex Street, Charlestown, was gunned down a short distance away from his home around 10.20pm.

His friend, Shekel Williams, 22, of James Street, Albouystown, was also shot once to his right foot in the attack.

The death of Payne, a member of the Coast Guard, has left his family with the suspicion that the attack was due to a case of mistaken identity since they were not aware of him having any disputes with anyone.

On the night of the shooting, Payne was in the company of a group of men when two men armed with guns rode up on a motorcycle and discharged rounds in their direction. Payne was shot about the body, including once to the chest, and he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The murder is being thoroughly investigated and investigators are exploring several leads, according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum.
