Umpire critical after stabbed, husband hangs himself

A forty-four-year-old woman is currently battling for her life at a city hospital after she was stabbed about her body on Sunday evening by her husband who took his own life.

Dead is Melroy Parker, 47, a mechanic of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara (EBD), who hanged himself.

Abina Parker, a former national cricketer and a professional umpire was rushed to the Diamond Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public hospital (GPH) on Sunday evening. There she is admitted as a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a critical condition. She sustained several stab wounds about her body including to her face.

The couple shared a 17-year-old son.

Stabroek News understands that the incident occured at their Kaneville home around 21:00 hrs Sunday after they were involved in a heated argument.

While the circumstances surrounding the argument remain unclear, reports revealed that Abina had just returned home from a cricket match and was going to check on her son when Melroy armed himself with a kitchen knife and attacked her.

As a result, she ran into her bedroom with her son and locked the door. However, Melroy managed to gain entry and dealt her several stabs to her body.

A neighbour recalled hearing screams coming from the house but before the woman could have gone over to find out what was transpiring, a bloodied Abina was seen running out of the house.

The couple is known for having arguments from time to time.

Her son was too traumatized to comment on the incident.
