The court heard that on March 31, at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Devmattie Persaud, 21, of Agricola, allegedly stole a Samsung Galaxy Note 2, valued at $120,000, from Andrew Young.

Persaud, a shop attendant, pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to her by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.

The prosecution told the court that the cell phone was recovered on Persaud and that it is now lodged at the police station.

However, in an unexpected turn of events, Young, who was present in court, told the Chief Magistrate that the family of the defendant pleaded with him to not go further with the case because she has a young baby. As a result, Young said, he would not give evidence against the defendant in the matter.

Persaud was subsequently reprimanded and the matter was then dismissed by the Chief Magistrate, who also placed the woman on a 12-month bond to keep the peace.
