Father released on station bail after La Grange boy’s fatal fall from truck

The father of 10-year-old Ishmael Raghubir, who was driving the truck from which his son fell to his death on Sunday, has been released on station bail.

The primary school student, of Independence Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara, was riding in the tray of the canter truck along Agriculture Road, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara when the accident occurred.

According to acting Traffic Chief Boodnarine Persaud, Raghubir and his sister were in the tray and the boy fell out as a result of the vehicle swerving. The man has told police that he swerved to avoid an approaching vehicle.

Persaud noted that they only have one side of the story as Raghubir’s father cannot recall the number of the vehicle he swerved to avoid.

After the father realised that his son had fallen out of the vehicle, he immediately stopped and went to his aid. The lad was picked up and rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Persaud also stated that investigations have revealed that Raghubir’s parents along with his two other siblings were sitting in the driver’s cabin when the accident occurred. He pointed out that it is an offence for persons to transport passengers in the tray of their vehicle without a permit from the traffic department.
