A man was stabbed to death just after midnight yesterday along the Plaisance Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD), following an argument with another man.

He has been identified by police as bodywork technician Orrette West, 28, of Guyhoc Park.

The suspect remained on the run up to late last evening.

The fatal altercation, during which West was stabbed to his chest, occurred around 12.30am. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Guyana Police Force, in a press release, said its investigations revealed that West was in the company of his girlfriend when an argument ensued between him and the unknown assailant over a fight they had some time ago.

As a result, the suspect then whipped out a knife and dealt West a stab to his chest before escaping, the police said.

When Stabroek News visited the dead man’s house yesterday, his common-law wife was being comforted by relatives and friends, who had gathered upon learning of West’s death.

His wife, Shevon (only name given), told Stabroek News that she learnt of the murder when a villager visited her house and informed her of the man’s death. However, she was unclear about what exactly led to West’s demise. “I myself up to now still trying to find out what happen, because I wasn’t there and hearing like thirteen different stories,” she said.

She added that she was told West left his home early Thursday evening for a weekly lime with friends along the Plaisance Railway Embankment. “I just hear that he was gambling and something went wrong and he got stab up,” Shevon noted.

However, a source told this newspaper that it was while there the now dead man left his girlfriend for a while and returned and found her dancing with the suspect. As a result, an argument ensued and he was stabbed.

His body is currently at the Georgetown Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

West, who was described as a very quiet and hardworking individual, is survived by his daughter, siblings and other relatives.
