Four years jail, $1.5M fine for duo over airport cocaine trafficking attempt

Two men were yesterday jailed for four years and fined $1.5 million after they were found guilty of conspiring to traffic cocaine at Guyana’s main international airport.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan found Kurt Sonage and Israel George guilty of the offence of conspiring to traffic cocaine following a trial at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. The defendants were charged with conspiring with person/persons known and unknown to traffic 580 grammes of cocaine at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on July 3, 2015.

Prior to finding the defendants guilty of the offence, the Chief Magistrate stated that the prosecution had proved its case leaving the court with no doubt that the defendants were guilty.

Before sentencing, attorney Euclin Gomes, who represented Sonage, requested that the court be merciful to his client and impose a minimal sentence. This request was supported by attorney Glenn Hanoman’s representative who appeared in his absence for the other defendant.

Sonage and George were later sentenced to four years in prison along with a fine of $1.5 million.
