Corentyne fishers placed on bail on ganja charge

Two Corentyne fishermen were yesterday placed on $50,000 bail each, when they appeared at the Springlands Magistrate Court to answer to a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Johnny Barry, 25 and Brian Wade, 21, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

It was alleged that on Friday last, the two fishermen of Number 77 Village Corentyne, Berbice, were in a car when it was stopped for a random search at Number 67 Village and police discovered 48 grammes of cannabis in the back seat of the car.

Although Police Prosecutor Godfrey Playter opposed bail, Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh decided to grant the men their pre-trial freedom and set bail at $50,000 each.

The fishermen are set to return to court on August 8, for trial.
