Mahdia businesspersons concerned at high transport costs, lack of banking services

Mahdia businesspersons earlier this month complained to the government about high transportation costs, the state of the road to Linden and the lack of banking facilities.

The Government Information Agency (GINA)  on Monday said these issues were among a number raised with Minister of Business Dominic Gaskin and his team when they visited on  July 22 – 24.

During the visit, the Minister also met with the Regional Democratic Council.

GINA said that the visit to Region Eight, sub-district two, was to accommodate meetings to give the business community the platform to discuss their issues with the Ministerial team.

Concerns raised by the Mahdia business community included: the state of the Linden to Mahdia road; the high cost of transportation; the lack of business registration and licensing services in the Sub-District; and access to finance and banking services.

GINA said that  Gaskin while addressing the concerns said that “Government is committed to the development of all of Guyana, hence the number of outreach activities by various Ministers of Government to hear the concerns and better understand the development priorities of communities”.

The Minister also emphasized the need for diversification into value-added products in order to increase economic benefits to the community

A representative of the Small Business Bureau who was on the delegation, used the opportunity to explain the work of the Bureau to individuals attending the various meetings.
