Den Amstel group concludes Emancipation Day activities

The Den Amstel Cultural Organisation (DACO), which conducted packed activities in observance of this year’s Emancipation Day celebration, ended yesterday evening with indoor games and musical entertainment.

DACO Chairman Gordon Gittens told Stabroek News that the annual event featured cultural, religious and physical activities.

Residents were treated to the highly anticipated cycling and road race yesterday morning for males and females in the senior and junior categories. Trophies were presented to the first, second and third place winners in each category.

He said a joint church service was held at the Ebenezer Congregational Church on Sunday and that President David Granger had graced it with his presence.

DACO continued the celebrations with a candlelight parade throughout the village, accompanied by African drumming and concluded with a campfire at the community centre ground, where the former chairman of the Hague/Blankenburg Neighbourhood Democratic Council delivered the feature address.

Gittens said the programme kicked off on Saturday evening with a concert and fashion show that featured African wear, evening dresses and swimwear. They were pleased to showcase swimwear that a resident had crocheted.
