Dear Editor,
In the words of the great Rev William Barber in his speech at the Democratic Convention, “Pay people what they deserve, share your food with the hungry. Do this and then your nation shall be called a repairer of the breach”. This call is clearly not manifest in Guyana in 2016 under President Granger, and I am sensing this is because some members of his team are under-performing. As the Head of State and Head of Government he is constitutionally bound to find out why and tell the people why his respective ministers are not delivering the bacon on these issues. In such an address, he should also answer the question as to when better progress will be made on this journey to the good life for the many. These are hard times for the working class in Guyana and they expect much more from President Granger. The workers continue to be unable to access a wage increase because we have chosen a convoluted system to delay and deny them their bounty. This misery must end for them, and it is the duty of a Head of State to see to it that their misery is alleviated. When the people felt the pain of the ERP in the 1990s Hoyte brought on SIMAP; when the people were complaining about their wages situation under Jagan, he offered a 41 per cent increase in the early 1990s within a short six months period. This is leadership; creating the opportunity when there is none. So I am humbly asking, when will the workers secure their bounty from the negotiations on the wages?
