Prison steel pan teacher remanded for ganja trafficking

A La Parfaite/Harmonie man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was accused of having ganja for trafficking

Shawn Koulen, 41, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore where he was read a charge which stated that on August 11 at the Georgetown Prison, he had 400 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Koulen pleaded not guilty to the offence.

According to the facts presented by the prosecutor, the defendant teaches steel pan at the prison. He said on the day in question, police, acting on information received, searched Koulen’s bag and found three yellow parcels which contained the illegal drug. The prosecutor said when asked about ownership of the parcels, the defendant stated that they belonged to him.

Koulen was later remanded by the magistrate and the matter was adjourned to September 12.
