Shot man drives himself to hospital

A 31-year-old man drove himself to a city hospital early yesterday morning after he was shot and robbed of $30,000 by three armed men.

The incident occurred around 2.55 am yesterday at the corner of Cemetery Road and D’Urban Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown. Mark English, a messenger at the Bank of Guyana, who resides at Lot 992 Providence, East Bank Demerara sustained a single gunshot wound to his left foot.

He managed to drive himself to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he underwent surgery. Up to press time, he was said to be in the recovery room.

The police, in a statement issued yesterday, said enquiries disclosed that English had gone to a shop to make a purchase when he was approached and robbed of the cash. “During the process, one of the men who was armed with a handgun discharged several rounds at the victim, hitting him in his left leg,” the police said.

The suspect is yet to be apprehended.
