In the issues of Stabroek News of Tuesday, January 16, 2007 and Wednesday, January 17, 2007 and in subsequent issues we published statements indicating that the plaintiff Dr Nanda Gopaul then occupying the position of Permanent Secretary, Office of the President, had directed the Government Information Agency (GINA) to withdraw government advertisements from the Stabroek News.
We accept the assurance of Dr Gopaul, and believe, that he did not give such directions and was not involved in the action of switching government advertisements from Stabroek News to another newspaper.
We therefore wish to apologise to Dr Gopaul for any embarrassment that he may have suffered as a result of our publication of the above statements.
