Men, women chess teams lose in Baku

Guyana’s male and female chess teams lost their respective eight round matches to Barbados and Zambia respectively as the 42nd annual Chess Olympiad continued yesterday in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Coming up against Zambia, the Guyanese lost 0-4 with WCM Maria Varona Thomas losing to Lorita Mwango, Jessica Clementson going down to Linda Banti Hamoonga, Sheriff Ali being defeated by Constance Mbatha and Julia Clementson losing to Mulwale Bwala Lubuuto.

Against Barbados only Roberto Neto on board four was able to secure a draw as the top three Guyanese players lost to their opponents all of whom were higher rated and FIDE Masters.

Barbados won the tie by three and one half points to half a point with FIDE Master Orlanod Husbands defeating Anthony Drayton, FIDE Master

Martyn Del Castillo defeating Ronuel Greenidge, FIDE Master Terry Farley winning from Haifeng Su while Kemp Lynch drew with Neto.
