The corn plant

garden (new)Dracaena fragrans commonly called corn plant originated from Africa and has adapted well in the tropics.

Corn plant is best grown as a house plant, and although it can grow outdoors it must be planted under a semi-shaded area where it would not receive direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves.

Corn plant is admired for its beautiful, long, arching, variegated leaves.  These striped leaves are green on the outside and yellow on the inside.  They can grow approximately 5 to 7 ft tall; however, if you wish to have a shorter corn plant you can cut the top with a sharp pair of pruners.

Corn plants are elegant for offices and homes with their exotic appearance.  They are also often seen in hotel lobbies, offices, banks and large hallways.

Corn plant grows best in well-drained potting soil and is easy to take care of.  It should be placed in bright light but not direct sunlight.

Mist leaves daily as the plant likes to be moist.  Fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food once every 2 weeks.  You can also use Miracle Gro Leaf Shine on the leaves for that glossy effect.

Until next week, Happy Gardening!
