Reality check

Dear Editor,

Re the city council notice on page 25 of Stabroek News, September  1 – let’s have  a reality check. The notice deals with two problems: A. Waste Water; B. Rain Water.

In A. it is agreed that this type of waste must be drained to the sewer.  However, the problem lies with the sewerage system.  This system was laid down (subject to correction) in the 1920s, nearly 100 years ago.  It is “malfunctioning” for several reasons.  In one area householders have had to raise their gullies and chambers by two feet.  It is a major problem that central government has to deal with.  Needed is a major grant and experienced international contractors to rectify the problems.

In B. ‒ Rainwater ‒ is there any building in Georgetown where the rainwater in drainpipes does not flow to the gutters or alleys?  Even those buildings which have water storage facilities have overflows which lead to the gutter.

Is this a stunt to raise money?  The council says it is owed “Billions” in rates.  Why don’t they take action on this front?

Yours faithfully,
