Jean La Rose resigns as Chronicle board chair

Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Guyana National Newspapers Limited Jean La Rose has resigned with effect from October 1, citing conflicts with time for community and human rights work.

According to a press release from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) La Rose submitted her resignation dated September 23 to Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, under whose portfolio information falls, and formally announced it at a GNNL board meeting yesterday.

The release stated that in her letter, La Rose said the demands of being on the GNNL Board did not allow her much time to do her community work, especially in human rights and indigenous community’s development.

“At this, point I feel I am not contributing to the further development of the board or the GNNL as I may have done if I had more time to dedicate towards fully understanding my role as Chair or as Director,” the release quoted her as stating.

It said La Rose expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for the confidence he expressed when he recommended her appointment.

Nagamootoo said he accepted her resignation with a heavy heart, but understood her reasons. The release said that in a letter, he reminded La Rose that he had proudly recommended her appointment as she is an outstanding woman and champion of a cause of promoting human rights and the interests of indigenous peoples. He wished her well in her continuing endeavours.

The release noted that La Rose was appointed chairperson of the GNNL Board on September 15, last year and had also received a National Award for long and dedicated service in indigenous rights activism.
