KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC- The third-round match between Jamaica and Suriname in the Men’s Caribbean Cup has been postponed due to safety concerns regarding Hurricane Matthew, officials have announced.
Defending champions Jamaica were due to host Suriname at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex in Kingston today.
But a statement from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) announced a postponement as Matthew, a category four storm, threatened.
CFU says it is also monitoring the situation in Haiti and will make a final determination on that country’s scheduled encounter with French Guiana also carded for today at Stade Sylvio Cator in Port-au-Prince.
Media reports in Haiti say at least two people have died as a result of the heavy rains from the outer bands of Hurricane Matthew that drenched Jamaica and Haiti on Monday, flooding streets and sending many people to emergency shelters.
CFU says all other matches for today will proceed as planned.
Antigua and Barbuda is away to Curacao and Trinidad and Tobago will host the Dominican Republic.
The top four teams emerging from Round 3 will qualify to the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup while the fifth-placed team will advance to a play-off against a team from UNCAF in a bid to earn a Gold Cup berth.
Last year, for the first-ever time, four Caribbean teams – Cuba, Haiti Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago — advanced past the Gold Cup’s group stage.
