Retired CANU prosecutor found dead in car at stelling

Retired CANU special prosecutor Oswald Massiah was yesterday morning found dead in his car which was parked at the Parika Stelling, East Bank Essequibo.

Divisional Commander Leslie James when contacted told Stabroek News that Massiah was discovered around 5.30 am. Foul play is not suspected. However, a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Massiah was said to be in his early 70s and is originally from Queenstown, Essequibo Coast.

Stabroek News was told that Massiah was at the stelling waiting to board a ferry bound for Essequibo. When the time arrived and someone tapped on his window to signal that he could board there was no response.

Massiah retired late last year and was said to be suffering from several illnesses including heart complications.

Massiah was a traffic rank in the Guyana Police Force for a number of years before becoming a prosecutor. When he retired from the force at age 55, he was appointed the special prosecutor for CANU.

Head of CANU James Singh in an invited comment said that the death comes as a shock to all at the entity. Describing him as a stalwart, he said that Massiah who was very jovial, always willing to give advice and very knowledgeable about his job, will be missed.

Singh said that Massiah worked alongside him for eight years.
