The sooner Muirhead leaves the better

Dear Editor,

I had written on a few occasions that the WICB did not believe in coaching. I did not know a great deal about Mr Muirhead, but I had the feeling that he might have been a fine CEO in most conventional businesses, but was a horrible choice to lead West Indies cricket. Well, the board could not have done worse in its choice of a CEO. Here is what Mr Muirhead said after the humiliation of West Indian cricketers in their series against Pakistan:

“I honestly don`t think Simmons’ sacking is affecting the team. Can any single person affect the performance of a team? I heard Andy Roberts say that in their time they didn’t even have a coach.” Can anyone understand how such a man could have been chosen in 2014 to be the CEO of West Indies cricket? Thankfully he is gone, and the board will find someone who has some idea of what it means to lead West Indies cricket at this time. The sooner Mr Muirhead leaves the scene the better it would be for all concerned. I still cannot believe he actually said those words in a serious tone. I hope his views were not representative of those of the majority of the board, although I suspect they were.

Yours faithfully,

Romain Pitt
