Dear Editor,
For 15 months I have watched the coalition government struggle and fumble to come up with a strong and viable economic plan. To date there is no major accomplishment by the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Business or Go-Invest; in fact by the entire coalition government in the area of economic development. There has been no action or policy initiative by this government that has helped to stimulate the economy which could lead to sustainable growth and development.
Since the government lacks the necessary expertise or ‘know how’, why haven’t they reached out and requested the assistance of diaspora Guyanese with the requisite skills and experience in these fields. Since I am a Guyanese who resides in the Washington DC area, three persons come to mind that are eminently qualified to assist the current government. I am not sure if any of these individuals is already working with the government. I’m also sure there are other qualified persons from other parts of the diaspora. The three persons are: Mr Aubrey Stephenson, Mr Floyd Haynes, and Mr Ralph Bazilio. All three of these men are successful Guyanese businessmen, and all three have built and managed successful businesses probably larger than several ministries combined. Any of these gentlemen could make a significant contribution to the development of Guyana. In fact Mr Stephenson already runs a successful security business in Guyana (Federal Management Systems). Editor, every country in the world utilizes its diaspora talent as part of its growth and development strategy. Why is there a reluctance on the part of this government to tap into the Guyanese diaspora, particularly from among those who are not retired GDF soldiers?
