GAWU writes Granger on bonus for sugar workers

The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) on December 15 wrote President David Granger seeking his intervention in ensuring a bonus for sugar workers.

GAWU’s letter to the President followed the announcement by the government that public servants earning below $500,000 per month would benefit from a tax-free bonus of $25,000.

In his letter, GAWU General Secretary Seepaul Narine said the union was encouraged by the bonus and was seeking Granger’s help in ensuring a similar one for sugar workers. The union pointed out that for the first time in 64 years, sugar workers will not receive any Annual Production Incentive. The union also noted that sugar workers did not receive a pay rise for 2015 or 2016.

“A similar bonus to these workers would surely help, in some way, to offset expenses in the upkeep of their family, especially in this season of goodwill”, the union stated.
