‘Greatest of the Streets’ winners receive prizes

Two-time defending Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown champions Sparta Boss yesterday received their prizes at a simple presentation ceremony held at the Banks DIH Limited Sports Club.

The East La Penitence outfit successfully defended their title with a 1-0 win over Tucville in the final at the National Park last Friday.

The top four finishers [Tucville (2nd), Broad Street (4th), Sparta Boss (champion) and Back Circle (3rd)] in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown Leg displaying their respective accolades in the presence of Banks DIH Limited executives, Director of Sports Christopher Jones and Colours Boutique Staffer Creanna Damon
For their efforts, Sparta walked away with $500,000 and the championship trophy while Tucville received the runners-up package of $200,000 and a trophy.

Back Circle collected their third place package of $150,000 and a trophy after defeating Broad Street 3-2 on penalty kicks in the third place playoff. Broad Street walked away with $75,000 and a trophy.

In a brief address, Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste thanked all the teams for taking part in the event and of raising the overall standard of play adding that the top four finishers will represent the zone at the National Championship in 2017.

According to Baptiste, the discipline of the participating teams need to be improved in future editions of the tourney and said that indiscretions will result in teams being disqualified immediately.

Creanna Damon, a representative of secondary tournament sponsor Colours Boutique, thanked the spectators and the players for their support in making the tournament a continued success.

Meanwhile, Director of Sports Christopher Jones praised Banks DIH Limited on behalf of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for their continued support of the event.

According to Jones, it was important that the corporate sector lend their support to the government towards the advancement of sport.

He also disclosed that the NSC was in discussion with the Ministry of Finance to provide benefits in the form of “tax breaks and waivers” to corporate entities that invest in sport so as to encourage other businesses to come on board.

Jones said that the NSC will continue to support the event in any capacity going forward. The West Demerara zone of the event will commence in late January 2017.
