Driver remanded over bread vendor’s road death

A Grove construction worker was yesterday remanded to prison after he was formally charged with causing the death of bread vendor Joseph Jaipaul, who died one month after being struck down on the Bagotstown Public Road.

It was alleged that Dwayne Bennons, 36, of 981 Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara drove minibus BHH 4972 in a manner dangerous to the public on November 28, at Bagotstown Public Road, causing the death of Jaipaul.

Bennons, who was unrepresented at the time of his hearing, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the prosecution’s facts, on the day in question, the defendant was driving at a fast rate, south along the eastern carriageway of the road, when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with Jaipaul, who was on a bicycle at the time.

The prosecution made objections to bail due to the gravity of the charge and the prevalence of the offence, resulting in Bennons being remanded until his next court hearing, which will take place on January 18 in Court 5.

According to facts related to Stabroek News, Jaipaul was struck down on the morning of November 28 as he made his way to work on the West Bank Demerara, where he sold bread.

Jaipaul spent the next few weeks in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital and subsequently succumbed to his injuries on Sunday last. He had sustained broken legs, spinal injury, broken ribs and a punctured lung as a result of the accident.

Stabroek News had earlier this week reported that Bennons had been offering assistance to Jaipaul’s family and had even been at their home on Monday helping with the arrangements for the wake.
