Poultry farmer foils traffic light hold up

Two men, one of whom was armed with a firearm, were foiled in their attempt to rob proprietor of Edun’s Poultry Farm Sidiq Edun on Thursday morning at the corner of Sheriff and Duncan streets.

The men accosted Edun as he was about to make a delivery. At the time, he was in the driver’s seat of a truck, which was loaded with eggs, and accompanied by his wife and two porters.

Efforts to contact Edun proved futile yesterday and his wife would only say that the matter is currently being investigated by the police.

A niece of the businessman said while she was not around when the attack occurred, she was told that her uncle and his wife narrowly escaped death since the men had fired at them. The bullet hit the truck’s windscreen as Edun accelerated and drove off. The men, who were on a motorcycle, the sped off along Duncan Street.

The niece explained that the attack occurred when Edun stopped the truck at the traffic light located at Sheriff and Duncan streets. She said she was told that the two men rode up alongside the vehicle and one of them pointed a gun at her uncle while demanding that he hand over whatever valuables he had in his possession. Instead, the businessman accelerated the vehicle and drove off along Sheriff Street at which point, the bandit fired.

Stabroek News understands that when investigators arrived on the scene they recovered a warhead and made arrangements to review nearby CCTV footage.
