Albouystown resident Michael Ridley, who fatally stabbed another man who had ambushed him owing to an ongoing dispute over a woman last year, was yesterday charged with murder and remanded to prison.
It is alleged that on November 23, 2015, at Albouystown, Ridley, 36, of Lot 182 Garnett Street, Albouystown, unlawfully killed Troy Brutus.
Ridley was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.
Ridley’s lawyer sought bail for him, while noting that he was placed on station bail with the condition that he report to the police station every month and had been doing so. The lawyer maintained that his client’s bail should continue since he will not flee jurisdiction as he has every intention of proving his innocence to the court.
But Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail for Ridley based on the gravity of the offence and the penalty it attracts.
Unmoved by the lawyer’s request for bail, Chief Magistrate McLennan remanded Ridley to prison. His matter was adjourned until April 28 for report and fixture.
Police had said that Brutus, 37, a cleaner, was the aggressor on the evening of the attack, when he reportedly set upon Ridley at Garnett Street, Albouystown and dealt him serval chops about the body. At the time, Brutus was armed with a cutlass and a knife.
A police statement said the defendant managed to take the knife from Brutus and fatally stabbed him about his body.
On that same night Ridley was also admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) with injuries as a result of the altercation.
According to Brutus’ family members, the dispute between the two men was over a woman.
