Husband caught assaulting wife on road

A man was on Thursday charged with assaulting and threatening his common-law wife after a court heard he was in the act by police.

It is alleged that on April 19th, 2016, at Goedverwating, East Coast Demerara, Qwame Holder, of Area C, Clay Brick Road, unlawfully assaulted Sasha Ally. It is also alleged that on the same day he acted in a threatening manner towards Ally.

Holder pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Better Hope Community Centre.

Police Prosecutor David Goodridge told the court that Holder was beating Ally while she was holding their son on the road and a police officer intervened and arrested him.

At the police station, Holder was searched and an icepick that he threatened to kill Ally with was found on him, Goodridge added.

He objected to bail based on the fact that Holder was already convicted for a similar offence against Ally. Goodridge said he feared that if Holder is granted bail, he will hurt the young woman again and may flee.

Holder, however, said he never laid a hand on Ally on that day and neither was he previously charged and arrested for a similar offence.

Magistrate Ally granted Holder his release on $40,000 bail for each charge. He was also placed on a bond to keep the peace and during the course the trial he is to report to the Sparendaam Police Station every Friday.

Breach of the bond could land him six months in prison. The matter was adjourned until June 10th for report.
