The Soesdyke/Huist Coverden Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) has started major works in the constituency to address drainage and garbage problems.
Vice-Chairman Aaron Grant-Stuart told Stabroek News that the NDC has received help from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure with the drainage works in the vulnerable areas. He explained that for years drains in the NDC have not been cleaned and cleared. With the assistance from the ministry, it is working to have the drains de-silted to ensure a free flow of water and prevent flooding.
Grant-Stuart explained that the council is also working to address the garbage situation in the communities. He said with the area being the first NDC visitors see when they enter the country, the council is working to beautify the communities and curb improper methods of garbage disposal. Additionally, Grant-Stuart explained that the NDC has received two acres of land and would be leasing six acres to aid with developmental projects.
He said they would be looking to create a burial ground because persons would often have to travel to the highway for funerals. He also said they would looking at developing playgrounds, a community centre, a secondary school and an orchard for students who are studying agriculture.
Further, he pointed out that they are looking to host workshops to teach life skills to help youth occupy their time.
The NDC would also be playing a part in the jubilee celebrations as it is hosting a flag raising ceremony in the community and other cultural activities.
