Cocaine accused for High Court trial

Shemroy Robertson, cocaine trafficking accused, was yesterday committed to stand trial at the High Court after a city court found that a prima facie case had been made out against him.

His co-accused, Odinga Chase, was freed of the charge, as the prosecution had conceded during closing arguments that there was no evidence to prove Chase had any knowledge of the narcotics.

Robertson, 31, of 101 Mandela Avenue and Chase, 29, of 169 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, were charged in January with having 1.156 kilogrammes of cocaine in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The prosecution presented closing arguments last week, during which attorney Konyo Sandiford-Thompson stated that Robertson had been the driver of the car from which a parcel containing the narcotics was thrown.

She also related that while Chase, who had been a passenger in the car, surrendered to police, Robertson drove away and had to be chased, and was eventually found hiding in a house on the dam of Mandela Avenue.

When Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan made the ruling yesterday, Robertson’s only comment to the court was, “I’m innocent of this offence.” The defendant chose to reserve his witnesses for the High Court trial.

Robertson was granted bail in the sum of $600,000 until the commencement of his trial, which will take place during the next assizes.
